I want a 20 million dollar bike. One that I don't have to pedal as much.
During my first week here in Brooklyn I emailed a guy on craigslist about a bike. 140$ seemed like a great deal. I did some research on proper bike fitting, decided that was for people with a ton of money, and proceeded to buy bikes out of the back of some guys van. I had doubts about the whole thing. For one, this didn't look too legit. Second, he claimed he gave them a tune up but most of the bikes were in bad shape. They were junkers or passed the junker mark. Third, the guy was out of the back of his truck!
I ended up testing a few bikes and found one that suited me. It was a ladies bike and I am not a lady. For some reason I had it in my mind that I did not want the bar in the middle of the bike as I didn't want my junk hitting it. I guess ladies bike also means lower seat. This leaves me riding a bike that isn't quite allowing me to ride up and down the hills of Windsor Terrace. Well, it will allow me to ride, but the ride is uncomfortably uncomfortable.
Therefore this is what's sort of making me think of getting a better bike. One that's fit to me a little bit more. I do like riding a bike. Today I rode it for 20 minutes which is much longer than I ever rode in the past 14 years. Our apartment is near PPW and 17th and we are somewhat at the top of a large hill from what I can tell. This leaves riding a bike for someone who is just beginning to ride bikes very very painful. I feel it in my thighs immediately. Even at low gear I seem to be destined to close up shop early and save up for a car. Bike riding isn't making me feel good.
At the same time i've been going on and on about conditioning myself and I guess i have to figure that the money I spent on the bike should be used wisely. Therefore I'll attempt to make as many 20 minute rides around town as I can stand over the next month to build my conditioning up.
One of the other reasons I want to ride around is I want to explore the neighborhood between 9th ave and the southern most corner of the park. It's very residential but I'm determined to know where each shop is in case of emergency or boredom.
Otherwise I have to explore Park Slope.
Here's hoping for some commerce in Windsor Terrace.
